July, 2021.
We know your pet loves the outdoors just as much as you do. Now that camping season is upon us, there is a lot to consider when bringing your pet along with you! Before you pack up the trailer or tent, consider these quick tips to ensure a smooth camping trip!
#1 Practice Makes Perfect
It is always a good idea to have a practice trial in your backyard before heading off to the wilderness. This allows you to familiarize your dog with the tent or trailer you will be traveling in and ensure that your dog is happy, comfortable, and confident before the big trip! Remember: the bigger the space for your pet, the better!
#2 Plan Ahead
Before you leave for your trip, make sure to confirm that the campgrounds, and other stops you will be making, are pet-friendly! There can be many to choose from so make sure to pick the ones most suitable to your pet’s needs. Also, while planning for the time it will take to arrive at your destinations, make sure to allow time for stops for your four-legged family member(s) as well! Plan for stops where your pet can stretch their legs, have a drink, and have a bite to eat.
It is also important to make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date and that they are on consistent flea/tick and heartworm prevention. You can call us anytime during our office hours to confirm your pet’s vaccination records.
#3 Health and Safety!
We must always keep our dogs’ health and safety in mind! While on holiday, be attentive to your dog’s health and behaviour. Check for signs of nervousness, agitation, and fear throughout your trip.
Wildlife can be a risk factor no matter where you are camping in Canada. Make sure to educate yourself on the wildlife in the area where you are camping. There are negative reactions that can occur if your pet comes into contact with other animals such as raccoons, bats, rats, porcupines, and more! Therefore, avoid interactions with other wildlife by making sure your pet’s food is enclosed safely and not out in the open to attract any neighbouring critters.
It is always best to be prepared for any emergencies as well. Take note of the closest animal emergency clinic should you ever need to seek medical care for your pet.
#4 Camping Gear for Dogs!
Yes! Shopping for your pet’s camping gear can be just as fun as shopping for your own. Perhaps your dog would benefit from the items listed below?
- Paw protectors/rain jacket/sweater
- Dog life jacket
- Wipes and dog towels
- Portable dog bowls
- Travel bed
- Favourite types of toys!
You can never be over-prepared! We want your pet to enjoy camping as much as you do.
Happy adventuring friends!
