Are you thinking of adopting a pet soon? If that is the case, congratulations from all of us here at Barrie Animal Hospital! Part of the responsibility of pet ownership is considering spaying/neutering your pet at the appropriate time. Barrie Animal Hospital recommends having your pets spayed or neutered. Read on for additional information on why!

WHAT IS A SPAY AND NEUTER PROCEDURE?

A neuter procedure consists of removing the testicles of your dog or cat. The surgical procedure of sterilization for a female dog or cat is known as a spay procedure. A spay procedure removes the ovaries and uterus of your pet. Both procedures are done under general anesthesia, with your pet fully asleep! When you talk to your veterinarian about scheduling a neuter or spay procedure for your pet, we will begin the process with an initial exam and pre-surgical bloodwork should your veterinarian recommend it. We will then discuss booking your pet’s procedure at an appropriate date. We are here to answer any questions throughout the process!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF NEUTERING /SPAYING MY PET?

  1. There are many health benefits to having your pet spayed/neutered. This procedure can help avoid diseases. For female dogs, for example, spay procedures can help to avoid specific cancers and uterine infections.
  2. Spay/Neuter procedures can also help to avoid behavioural issues. When your pet is in heat different behaviours can present themselves such as aggression or territorial behaviours. By spaying/neutering your pet you can help to avoid these behaviours from occurring.
  3. Avoid unplanned puppies/kittens! It only takes one time for your pet to escape outside or get lost from your line of sight for a short amount of time. Pregnancies can be physically demanding on female cats/dogs. You are also helping to avoid stray pet situations in your city. Therefore, spaying or neutering your pet actually helps the entire community!
