Dr. Mark

Dr. Mark Bolton

Veterinarian

Dr. Mark Bolton is the owner of Barrie Animal Hospital. He was born and raised in Shanty Bay and attended Eastview High School in Barrie. He grew up with lots of pets and spent a lot of time working on neighbouring farms. He liked helping the animals and wanted to become a surgeon. In high school, he worked at clinics and travelled to different farms with large animal veterinarians. He did many farm duties, including milking cows. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Guelph before attending the Ontario Veterinary College.

As one of our veterinarians, Dr. Bolton keeps our patients healthy. He performs examinations, gives vaccines, does wellness blood testing, and parasite prevention. He treats sick animals and performs surgery as well as dental cleanings and surgical extractions of teeth.

Dr. Bolton and Dr. Schmidt have two kids, Lauren and Carter. They also have a Doberman named Stella, a donkey named Moritz, two ponies named Foxy and Scout, and Dr. Bolton’s favourite pet, a guinea pig named Twinkle Toes. The family enjoys working around the farm, boating and swimming in the summer, and skiing and tobogganing in the winter.

Dr. Bolton has attended many extra courses on general and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, and oral surgery. He feels most fulfilled performing a complicated surgery or successfully completing a difficult dental case. Watching the pets go on to heal and be comfortable is very rewarding.

Dr. Katrin

Dr. Katrin Schmidt

Hospital Administrator and Chief Veterinary Director

Dr. Katrin Schmidt is in charge of making sure all team members understand their impact on the client-and-pet experience to ensure a better outcome for all. She was born and raised in Germany in a rural mountain setting. She enjoyed horseback riding and country living at an early age. In fact, she spent most of her childhood working with animals, including horses. Training horses exposed her to many of the behavioural principles we apply to most species, including humans. As a teenager, she lived in Dallas, Texas, and Hudson, Quebec.

Dr. Schmidt has always had a passion for medicine, science, and technology. Her interest and experience in solving complex problems in new and unique ways led her to attend the Veterinary College in Guelph. Veterinary medicine seemed just a little bit more challenging than human medicine or computer science.

Since graduating with a BSc. in 1991 and a DVM in 1993, Dr. Schmidt — along with her husband, Dr. Bolton — has been a veterinary practice owner since 2000. She co-founded the Barrie Veterinary Emergency Clinic in 2001. As primary patient care coordinator and hospital administrator, it was important for her to be adequately trained in patient and client care as well as business needs. So in 2004, she completed her Certificate of Veterinary Practice Managers diploma and most recently graduated from the MBA program at Lakehead University.

With her work experience in veterinary community services, she is able to help clients and members of the team with personal and professional challenges and dreams. Helping others succeed in improving pet health and strengthening the human-animal bond continues to be a rewarding experience. As a constant learner, she also enjoys educating and coaching others.

Dr. Schmidt is very fortunate to have her immediate family residing in the Barrie and Orillia area. She lives with her husband, Dr. Bolton, their two children, and their Doberman and ponies in lovely Horseshoe Valley.

Dr. Stephen McCorry

Dr. Stephen McCorry

Veterinarian

Dr. Stephen McCorry was born in Northern Ireland, close to Belfast. He grew up on a cattle farm and was very involved in the farm throughout his childhood. He studied Veterinary Medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland, and graduated in 2022. In 2023, Stephen moved to Ontario and joined our team at Barrie Animal Hospital!

Growing up on a farm started Stephen’s interest in working with animals. He had many pets growing up, but his favourite animals are dogs! Stephen has 4 dogs back home in Ireland and hopes to add a canine companion to his life here in Ontario soon.

Stephen’s favourite part of Veterinary Medicine is connecting with clients and learning more about them and their pets. He enjoys working with clients to achieve the best possible outcomes for their beloved family members. Stephen also has a special interest in Internal Medicine.

Outside of work, you’re likely to find Stephen doing most anything active and outdoors. He’s currently training for a triathlon!
